Braille Library |
| |
The Braille Library was established in 1991 to provide educational support to the persons with visual impairments for their human development. Books and other materials for persons with visual impairments are very few; therefore the main function of the library is to produce Braille materials and talking books through audio cassettes and compact discs. The library provides students with reading materials and also with a space to study together. There are about 336 students who use this library. |

The main aim is to provide medical services and education on the prevention of the disabilities for those who lack access to health care services, especially for the disabled persons. Medical centre in Tongi, the outskirts of Dhaka, has an M.B.B.S. doctor and an eye specialist who provide care to BERDO beneficiaries and others patients at very low cost. Another medical centre is set up in Banaripara with a general doctor to examine patients and prescribe medicine and medical advice. |

Scholarship |
|
| |
We are providing scholarship to visually impaired but meritorious students to help them continue their university studies. The scholarship is mostly used for transportation and book costs, as these two factors are the most constraining. In the past, we have awarded 40 students with scholarships who were able to continue and finish their degrees. |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Due to financial constraints, this year we are unable to provide scholarship to students. We will continue this program as soon as the funds allow, and we are accepting donations of $8/month (or 500 taka) per student for one year to allow him/her to continue education. Please contact BERDO if you would like to sponsor a student in need. |

Job Placement |
|
| |
Persons with disabilities are disproportionately unemployed even if they are educated. BERDO is dedicated to help persons with disabilities find a job and therefore negotiates with governmental, business and other institutions to find appropriate employment for them. Forty two persons with disabilities of different types have been matched with a job thanks to BERDO’s persistence, and BERDO employed 10 staff members who have disability. |

The School of Happy World
|

(Education for the children with visual impairments)
Children with visual impairments are left out of the educational system and most of them end up becoming illiterate adults and unable to earn income. BERDO opened a school for visually impaired children to provide education in Braille, but also to educate them to be self-dependent and to increase their capacity, leadership and management development. |
| |
|
| |
Today, BERDO is providing education and live-in facilities to eight students who came from remote rural areas where they had no access to schools. BERDO is looking for partners, donors and individual contributions to provide financial assistance to individual students allowing them to complete primary education. Please contact BERDO if you and/or your organization would like to sponsor a child with visual impairments for $75/month (or 5000 taka) which would cover all of their living, schooling and medical expenses. |

Computer Training
|
| |
| |
This program is designed to further develop skills of persons with visual impairments by teaching them how to use a computer and to become proficient with general software programs and with internet. After the completion of the training, which is free of cost, the students are better qualified for a variety of jobs. BERDO takes an additional step and networks on behalf of the student to find job placement for him/her. |

Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program
|
| |
| |
CBR program was established to promote development of the disabled persons through encouragement, training and presenting them with opportunities to start income-generating activities by providing access to micro-credit. At the same time, CBR works to create awareness about disabilities by forming a group of disabled and non-disabled members in the community. To date, BERDO has formed 148 groups with 2083 members, out of which 191 are disabled.
